Our Wedding Cake

I never have done any Wedding Recap posts because this blog never existed until after our wedding day.  I thought it would be fun to join a link up today though, and show y'all pictures of our cake.  Thanks to Britt at The Magnolia Pair for hosting this, she's a new Alabamamian too! :)

Baron and I got married in a small town with not a whole lot of options for our wedding cake.  For some reason I was totally against getting our cake from Publix (a chain grocery store for you out of towners).  My Dad made quite a statement when he said, "Brekke, you've gotten every other important cake from Publix, your birthday's, graduations, funerals, births, everything!! Why would you go somewhere else for your wedding day?"  Good point Pops, especially considering there weren't a whole lot of options.  Well I conceded and agreed that we'd get our cake from Publix and it would be Funfetti.  Because what other options are there for flavors, really??

Unfortunately Publix said "NO" which nearly broke my heart but we went with the old favorite, vanilla cake with butter cream frosting.  It was kind of neat that the same woman who has baked all the cakes for my family got to make and decorate my wedding cake, that same woman used to give me cookies when I was just three years old riding along in my Mom's buggy.

I have a hard time making decisions so needless to say I went with the easy option of plopping some flowers on top of the cake for our topper.  Both sets of our parents still had their serving knives and we were very happy to be able to use them on our wedding day too!

I wish I had a better shot to show you the cake stand that we made.  Yes, made.  I couldn't make a decision about a cake stand that I liked (surprise, surprise!) so I thought if I couldn't find something I'd just pick up a plain white one at Target as a last ditch effort.  Well I shouldn't have made it a last minute thing because we had a simple math problem.  The following numbers aren't accurate but the story works the same: The bottom tier of the cake was 150 inches, the biggest cake plate I could find was 100 inches. Hmmm, do you see the dilemma?  Well thank the lord for my redneck family and their ability to rig up anything with duct tape, plywood, and Home Depot.  My Mom called me about a week before our wedding with the solution...

Y'all.  What is round, white, decorative, and big??  A ceiling fan cover plate, duh!  We bought one of these bad boys and dropped it off at Publix to set the cake on it...genius! (Sidenote: The first time I typed genius I actually wrote "genious", oh the irony!!)  You can see it in both pictures but the tiny little balls matched up very well so it's kind of hard to make out.

So will we eat the top tier on our first anniversary?  Heck no!  I love the sentiment of it but the thought of trying to haul a frozen cake with us on our 680 mile road trip when we moved to Alabama, along with a bunch of our belongings, a nervous dog, two cars, AND a goldfish was enough to make me want to drive off a bridge.  So we decided to save a bottle of our Walmart  delicious champagne and two pieces of our signature candies to enjoy on our first anniversary.

I give you our signature candies:

That's right folks, we gave out Nerds and Airheads.  My husband is an admitted nerd and I'm well.....let's just say it fits!!

I love your post about your dog's birthday! What kind of dog do you have? She seriously looks JUST look my in-laws' dog. And I am not a dog person at all, so I dont' understand how people put up all the extra stress and work that having a dog requires, but I have a lot of respect for those that do. I think it is such a special bond and so unselfish to have a pet!

I tried to follow you on GFC but couldn't find the button for it :(

That cake is absolutely gorgeous!! And I love what your dad said about Publix making it, just like all the other big occasions. Smart man.
Reminded me of my Publix cake memories. I always wanted my mom to make me her special treats EXCEPT for my birthday-- that cake always had to come from Publix!

That cake is sooo pretty. If there is one thing I would change about my wedding, it would be the cake. Mine wasn't pretty . . . and it wasn't awesome. Haha.
